INITIAL SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND PCS INSTRUCTIONS, PAPER TEMPLATES, AND REVIEW CRITERIA
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL SUBMISSION TYPES
The ICIS 2021 Program Committee invites submissions across 25 tracks, including two conference theme tracks: “IS for Sustainability” and “IS for Resilience”.
Six Types of Submissions
- Completed research papers. Can be submitted to any track except “Panels”, “PDW” or “Paper-a-thon”.
- Short Papers. Can be submitted to any track except “Panels”, “PDW” or “Paper-a-thon”.
- Teaching cases. Shall be submitted to the “Digital Learning and IS Curricula” track only.
- Panel proposals. Shall be submitted to the “Panels” track only.
- PDW proposals. Shall be submitted to the “PDW” track only.
- Paper-a-thon. Shall be submitted to “Paper-a-thon” track only.
Language
English (including American, British, Canadian, etc., dialects) is the language of the conference and of all submissions.
Originality
Submissions to ICIS 2021 must be original; submissions, or highly similar versions, cannot have been published or accepted in a journal or conference proceedings. Further, submissions must not be concurrently under consideration for publication or presentation elsewhere.
Template and Formatting Requirements
All submissions must be in Adobe PDF format only. Files submitted in other formats or that do not use the paper submission template will not be considered for review. You can download the paper submission template here: ICIS2021 Paper Submission Template.
An EndNote reference style file can be downloaded here (if you use the EndNote reference manager).
The body of the submission (text, figures, tables, references, and appendices) should be stored in one single file and must use the ICIS2021 Paper Submission Template. All figures and illustrations must be inserted into your Word.doc or Word.docx file as either JPG or GIF format (other formats or embedded graphic objects will not be converted to PDF correctly). For more instructions regarding figures, please see submission template. Any submission that does not use this template or deviates from the formatting requirements will be rejected without review.
Authors enter the submission title, abstract, keywords, and author information in the menus prompted by Precision Conference Solutions (PCS).
Be certain to do the following before uploading your paper to the ICIS 2021 PCS system:
- accept all changes and turn Track Changes “off”
- save document to PDF
- delete or remove all meta-data that can be traced to personal/author information in the PDF
Length Requirements
Each type of submission has specific page length requirements. See additional requirements specific to each type of submission below. Any submission that exceeds page length limits will be rejected without review.
Anonymize all Submissions – except Panel and PDW – for Blind Review
Authors name(s) should not appear in the body of the paper (including the abstract). Please note that if your paper reveals author names anywhere, they will be early rejected outright without any further review. Eliminate references to your institutions, your sponsors, your unpublished work and your published work if these references will identify any author. To aid in making your paper anonymous, leave Acknowledgement blank until the final version is prepared for the Proceedings.
Remove author and institution information from document properties. In MS-Word (prior to converting your file to pdf), (1) click on Tools->Options, and then click on the security tab. Under Privacy Options, select “Remove personal information from file properties on save.” OR (2) click on File->Properties, and then remove Author Information, depending on the version of MS-Word you have.
Panel and PDW proposal submissions do not have to be made anonymous for blind review.
How to Submit a Paper
All submissions are to be made via the ICIS 2021 submission system at PCS. After creating an account and logging on to the PCS site, the authors should go to “New Submissions” to submit their paper.
Please note that Paper-a-Thon and TREO submissions will only be possible after late May 2021.
Author Guide for the submission process via PCS is available here.
Number and Order of Authors
Each author can be on at most five (5) submissions. After initial submission, authors cannot be added to or deleted from completed research papers, short papers, teaching cases or PDWs. Panel proposers should be aware that Panel Track or Program Chairs may suggest changes in the slate of presenters for panels.
Copyright Note
For all papers accepted into ICIS 2021, authors of accepted papers will retain copyright. However, by submitting a paper, authors do agree that AIS can publish and reproduce any accepted papers in the ICIS 2021 Proceedings in the format of AIS’s choosing (CDs, e-Library and printed proceedings) under an established ISBN number for ICIS 2021.
ADDITIONAL FORMAT REQUIREMENTS SPECIFIC TO EACH TYPE OF SUBMISSION
In addition to the general submission requirements, there are additional requirements for each submission type. These are identified below:
Submission Type | Maximum Number of Pages |
---|---|
Completed Research Papers | 16 |
Short Papers | 8 |
Teaching Cases | Teaching case: 14 Teaching note: 5 |
Panel Proposals | 8 |
PDW Proposals | 5 |

These page limits are all inclusive, and include the title, body of the paper, figures and tables, references, and appendices.
Completed Research Paper Requirements
Completed research papers must not exceed sixteen (16) single-spaced pages (all inclusive) and must conform to the ICIS paper submission template. The page limit covers everything in the submission, including title, text, tables, figures, appendices, and references. Submissions that exceed this limit will be automatically rejected. For empirical work, completed research papers should have completed analyses and documentation of results. Completed research papers should be similar to journal submissions, but shorter.
Review Criteria for Completed Research Papers:
- Topic is relevant to a track theme.
- Objectives are clear and well-described.
- Paper is written clearly.
- Paper will draw an audience.
- Paper is well organized and flows logically.
- Literature review is appropriate.
- Methodology is appropriate (if relevant).
- Analyses are appropriate (if relevant).
- Evidence supports authors’ arguments (if relevant).
- Paper makes a useful contribution.
Short Paper Requirements
Short papers must not exceed eight (8) single-spaced pages and must conform to the ICIS paper submission template. The page limit covers everything in the submission, including title, text, tables, figures, appendices, and references. Submissions that exceed this limit will be automatically rejected.
Short papers typically describe ongoing work that is yet to be completed, but promising. Short papers could take various forms. For example, they can be theoretical (presenting promising frameworks), empirical (with some preliminary results), or present a design of novel and useful concepts, artefacts (testing need not to be done). Short papers should include a paragraph describing what work remains to complete the paper, and how the authors plan to continue working on the paper prior to ICIS 2021 in December 2021. Please note that the progress described is expected to be substantive in nature. Accepted short papers will be presented in regular sessions as short presentations during ICIS 2021, and will appear in the ICIS 2021 Proceedings. In case of acceptance, authors should specifically report the progress made to the study between acceptance and delivery of presentation. Additional information on how to prepare for presentations in ICIS 2021 will be made available after paper acceptances.
Review Criteria for Short Papers:
- Topic is relevant to a track’s theme.
- Objectives are clear and well-described.
- Paper is written clearly.
- Paper will draw an audience.
- Paper is well organized and flows logically.
- Literature review is appropriate.
- Methodology is appropriate (only if relevant).
- Analyses are appropriate (only if relevant—short papers are expected to provide preliminary results).
- Evidence supports authors’ arguments (if relevant).
- Whether the paper has the potential to deliver on the promised contribution.
- Substantive progress is expected between ICIS submission to December 2021.
- Completed papers should not be submitted to the short paper track. Short papers will be primarily evaluated on the basis of their potential contribution to the field. Priority is given to those which expand the boundaries of the field.
Teaching Cases Requirements
A teaching case must not exceed fourteen (14) single-spaced pages and the required teaching note must not exceed five (5) single-spaced pages (all inclusive for both). Both the teaching case and teaching note must conform to the ICIS paper submission template. Please compile teaching case and teaching note in a single PDF file for the initial submission. Teaching cases can only be submitted to the Digital Learning and IS Curricula track.
Panel Proposals Requirements
Panel sessions bring together researchers and/or practitioners with complementary or conflicting perspectives on a research topic or another issue of importance to the IS field. The panel proposals must not exceed eight (8) single-spaced pages (all inclusive) and must conform to the ICIS paper submission template. Proposers who want to include a video clip or similar to their submission must embed the link to the video in the pdf of the submission. Panel proposals may only be submitted to the Panels track. Please see the track description for further details and elements of a panel proposal.
PDW Proposals Requirements
The PDW proposals must not exceed five (5) pages (all inclusive) and must conform to the ICIS paper submission template. Proposers who want to include a video clip or similar to their submission must embed the link to the video in the pdf of the submission. PDW Proposals may only be submitted to the track. Please see the track description for further details and elements of a PDW proposal.
Paper-a-thon Requirements
The application process consists of completing a survey (link will be available later) in order to identify what interests, abilities, and resources you can contribute to a project team (e.g., data, methods, perspectives, and domain expertise). There is no submission requirement aside from this survey.
TREO Talk Requirements
TREO Talk submissions will be one (1) page abstracts that will be editorially reviewed to ensure that they are related to IS and appropriate in nature. The template for TREO Talk submissions is here. Accepted TREO Talks abstracts will be presented at a TREO Talk session. TREO Talks (including any material that the presenter would like to share) will be published in the TREO Talks section of the AIS e-Library. This will allow engagement with the material beyond the presentation at the conference. Submission details can be found here.
